Nespresso-compatible, and what that actually means

A "Nespresso-compatible" capsule fits the Nespresso OriginalLine system: Essenza, Pixie, CitiZ, Inissia, Lattissima, Creatista and every other machine that takes the small classic capsule. It does not fit Vertuo. Vertuo uses a larger barcoded capsule and no Italian roaster makes a true compatible for it, so if your machine is a Vertuo, this page cannot help you.

For OriginalLine owners, fit is a solved problem. What separates one compatible from another is what happens after the capsule is pierced, and that comes down to two things: the coffee inside and the material around it. The capsules here are 5 grams of espresso roasted in Italy, sealed in aluminium with a paper ring and packed in a protective atmosphere, which is the only format that holds ground coffee properly for any length of time. Plastic capsules breathe, and the aroma leaves within months. Sealed aluminium keeps for 24 months.

Four blends, each one stating what is inside. Platinum is 100 percent Arabica, the smoothest and most refined of the four, for people who drink espresso straight. Red is 80 percent Arabica and 20 percent Robusta: dark chocolate, dried fruit, the classic Italian bar profile. Black is 60/40 at a medium roast, the fullest body, the thickest crema and the most caffeine, built for milk drinks. Decaf is the Red without the caffeine. You will not find an intensity number on the box, because intensity scales are invented per brand and tell you nothing across brands; the blend and the roast tell you everything.

Which Nespresso machines do these capsules fit?

Every Nespresso OriginalLine machine: Essenza, Pixie, CitiZ, Inissia, Lattissima, Creatista, Le Cube and the older Concept models. Insert and brew, no settings to change. They do not fit Vertuo, which uses a larger barcoded capsule.

Is it safe to use third-party capsules in a Nespresso machine?

Yes. Aluminium compatibles are the same size and shape as the original and pierce the same way. Nespresso's warranty excludes damage caused by a third-party capsule, and in practice that means soft plastic ones, which can deform under pressure and leave grounds in the brewing chamber. A sealed aluminium capsule behaves exactly like the original.

Are these better than Nespresso's own pods?

On fit and crema, a good aluminium compatible is indistinguishable from the original. On the coffee, the difference is who roasted it and what they tell you about it. Nespresso publishes an intensity number; an Italian roaster publishes the blend. A 100 percent Arabica Platinum and a 60/40 Black are different drinks, and you choose between them on purpose rather than by guessing what "intensity 9" means.

Which blend should I choose?

Espresso straight: Platinum. Classic Italian bar shot: Red. Anything with milk, from cappuccino to flat white: Black, because a 100 percent Arabica shot disappears under steamed milk and a 60/40 blend does not. Evenings: Decaf, which behaves like the Red. If you are buying for someone else and do not know, choose Red.

How many capsules are in a box, and how long do they keep?

Ten capsules to a box, 5 grams of coffee each. Boxes of 50 and 100 are five and ten packs of ten, sealed individually. Shelf life is 24 months from roasting, because each capsule is sealed in aluminium under a protective atmosphere. Buy tens unless you drink two or more a day.

Can I recycle the capsules in Canada?

The capsule is aluminium with a paper ring, both recyclable. Empty the grounds into compost, then recycle the shell. Some municipal programs sort out small items, so check whether yours accepts small aluminium; where it does not, a few collected in a larger aluminium can go through together. The carton is plain recyclable board.

What about ESE pods, and do you sell them?

ESE pods are paper filter pods, 44 mm across, for manual espresso machines with an ESE adapter, not for Nespresso machines. They are compostable and the right choice if your machine is a traditional lever or pump machine rather than a capsule system. We carry a medium-roast Italian ESE pod in boxes of 50.

Do you supply cafés, hotels and offices?

Yes, across Canada and into the United States. Capsule machines suit boardrooms, hotel rooms and small lounges where a full espresso machine makes no sense.
